What is an e-commerce Website?

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or eCommerce, consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.

What is required to get up and running?

This list will change based on the specific requirements of your project. However, there are a few things you will need 99% of the time regardless of product and/or type of sales you plan on including in your site. We have included the following list as an example of possible required items/services to setup and maintain your e-commerce site:

  • Domain name
  • Hosting account (specific to E-commerce software you choose)
  • E-commerce software/application (i.e. X-Cart, PilotCart, osCommerce)
  • SSL Certificate for secure transactions (via hosting company)
  • Merchant account via Authorize.net or similiar (PayPal, LinkPoint, Authorize). This service is used to process credit cards for your site.

What type of website requires e-commerce?

If you plan on selling (or collecting money for) anything, your website will need some sort e-commerce functionality to process the customers payment and initiate an order to be shipped. Depending on your needs/requirements, PharSide will recommend several of the best options to you and you can choose from there. PharSide's e-commerce solution recommendations depend on the type of product you are selling or membership levels and prices, how items are shipped (or not shipped in membership/services scenarios) and many more factors. All of our recommendations are "well educated" and will be presented to you in a format that will allow you to make the right choose - the first time.

What is required to accept payments via my website?

To accept payments on your website you must signup for some sort of payment gateway or 3rd party payment processor (i.e. PayPal, iBill, CCbill). When choosing your payment processor, be sure to look at all of the facts. PayPal and Authorize.net are always PharSide recommended solutions for 99% of merchants. Authorize.net is the largest and most widely used credit card processor for the larger e-commerce sites and most e-commerce applications have pre-built modules for utilizing their system which ultimately saves you time and money during the development process. PayPal is always a decent option for smaller website that don't mind utilizing a 3rd party's system and leaving their website for the payment portion of the order process.
